- DIED. James M. Gavin, 82, legendary paratroop commander who
- became an early critic of the Vietnam War; in Baltimore. As an
- officer with the 82nd Airborne Division, Gavin parachuted with
- his troops during battles in Sicily, Normandy and the
- Netherlands and became known as "the jumping general." After
- retiring from the Army, Gavin twice served as President
- Kennedy's ambassador to France. After a 1967 visit to Viet Nam,
- he urged negotiations to end the war "by any means available."
